Taupiri School has organised an event this weekend to raise as money as they can for the Kaikoura community.

“We all feel sad for what Kaikoura is going through right now. Most of us felt the earthquake,” said PTA member Rachael Butler who came up with the idea of a Twilight Gala.

The gala kicks off at 5pm this Friday (December 2) and runs until 8pm. “We don’t have an amount we would like to raise – we just want to raise however much we can.”

There will be a bouncy castle, pedal cars, truck rides, lots of games, food and quick-fire raffles. Much of it is being organised by the PTA and school staff. Some senior students will be helping on the night, running games and whatever needs doing.

After the magnitude 7.8 earthquake on November 14 she contacted the Red Cross with an offer of donating toiletries and blankets but was told those were not currently needed.

“I pondered what other ways I could help and I came up with the idea for the fundraiser. I raised the idea with the PTA committee and all agreed it was an awesome idea.”

She says Taupiri School, with a roll of 53 pupils, is a great little school with an awesome spirit.
“This is for a great cause and we would love as many people to come along and support this.”
