All the fun of the fair

St Mary's Fair

Yuletide cheer came early to Gordonton in the form of St Mary’s Christmas Fair on Saturday.

The theme this year was Downton Abbey -the heritage church was decorated with three Christmas trees, garlands and wreaths decorated and are all adorned with metres and metres of pearls, ribbon, diamantes and feathers.

The fair has become a regular fundraiser to help raise money to build a hall at the back of the church.

And many cheers to the small team – above – who met once a month to make decorations. In November they started meeting weekly to get the church finished in time for the first Sunday of Advent on November 27.  Here’s a peek inside –

Outside there were stalls with homemade preserves and chutneys, raffles and crafts.

Of course there were donkey rides –

The church will also be open to view on Saturday 10 December from 9am-1pm. This is the same day as the Gordonton Country Market which is five minutes down the road in Hukanui Park.

St Mary’s will also open the church by appointment from 4th-24 December for groups of eight or more for a donation of $20, or $2 per person for larger groups.

Bookings for December 2017 Christmas weddings are now being taken.
