Wild hunt on way again

Attention keen young (and older) hunters – the Tauhei Combined School Wild Game Hunt is fast approaching. The fundraiser, in its seventh year, is showing it is an event not to be missed.

Each year it keeps getting better, says Rita Dewhurst who is on the organisaing committee.

“It’s a great way for kids to have fun and help their school in the process.  There are no age restrictions; last year we saw a range in age from pre-schoolers to retirees going out and giving hunting and fishing a go.”

This year’s event kicks off on Friday 19 May and finishes Sunday 21 May, and entries are out now.
“Children love to get involved; we have a junior hunter section for under 16 years, and a junior eeling section for those under 12. We also encourage all eels to be kept alive so we can release them back into the wild.”

All juniors that attend weigh in/prizegiving on Sunday go away with a goodie bag, she says. “It’s a great chance for dads (and mums) to bond with their kids through teaching them the skills of hunting and fishing, and a good opportunity to get children back out into the outdoors.”

Once again a range of sections are on offer, with the addition of a peacock section, and most points for deer, and longest tusk for boars.

“As with previous years the funds will go towards funding our reading recovery programme at school, but also upgrading our playground area which is in need of more bark and a tidy-up.”

For those not wanting to hunt but wanting to be a part of a great community event the weigh-in starts at 3pm on Sunday, and there will be delicious wild game available – wild pork rolls, goat curry, butter turkey, venison and fish chowder.

“We also aim to have some activities for the children such as possum and hare throw. This is followed by prize giving, with awesome prizes up for grabs, including cash prizes. There will be a great range of items raffled off, meat packs up for auction as well as some giveaways.”

The event is organised by a committee and school children are also involved. “We also have local members of other hunting clubs come on board to support us and offer advice which is great.
