Helping little Holly to a better new year

Little Holly, above, was found in the pound amnesty box one morning, with two siblings.

Cherie Baker, who runs Gordonton’s DC Rescue, says the catahoula cross is about nine to 10 weeks old.

“She’s a little shy with new people, once she knows you she follows you everywhere.”

Currently fostered on a lifestyle block with calves, a cat and other dogs, Holly is one of the many ‘clients’ looking for a new home.

Cherie says it’s the time of year when many people want to get rid of their dogs. “… litters of puppies, a lot underage, pregnant dogs, dogs with behavioral issues, dogs they have no time for anymore – the list goes on.
“We have dogs in care 24/7… The three of us work around the clock 24/7 to keep our rescue running regardless of where we are in the country.”
She expects to be very busy in coming weeks.  “People will want to surrender their four-legged Christmas presents. They go back to work and no longer have time, the kids didn’t look after the puppy like they thought they would, they didn’t realise how much work a puppy was….. just some of the excuses of poor present choices.”
Underage puppies are a concern.  “There is a misconception that once a pup is eating solids it can leave Mum or when Mum starts telling off the pups and setting boundaries then people think it’s a good idea to give away the pups.”
“Unfortunately a lot of people aren’t financially invested in their pups enough to supply them with puppy foodworm tablets that long. They think having puppies is great, and it can be, but it’s also a lot of work.
“We are always on the look out for reliable foster homes for all types/ages of dogs.”
DC Rescue will be at the Waikato Animal Expo, part of the Waikato Show at Claudelands Events Centre, April 6 – 8.
“We are set for a bigger year, with thousands of people through the doors every day, it is a great opportunity to promote your business to like-minded animal lovers. At this stage we have a few more stall sites available but they are selling quite quick.  Email us for a site or more information.”

But back to little Holly.  She is available for adoption and goes to her new home de-sexed, micro-chipped, registered with NZCAR and the council, worm/flea treated and with her first vaccination – as well as 30 days free pet insurance.   An adoption fee of $280 is asked to help recover part of her rescue costs.
