The Wandering River

There’s a new book out on the Waikato River, and one of the river’s old courses runs right past Gordonton.

The Wandering River relates the story of how over the last few tens of thousands of years the Waikato has meandered over and shaped the landscape.

Emeritus professor and former dean of Science at Waikato University John McCraw says people can still see some of the old courses along which the river ran – one went through Te Awamutu, another through Te Kowhai, yet another through Gordonton village and on the main highway going to Morrinsville.

The book, published by the Geoscience Society, includes three suggested field trips, with maps.  It is to be launched soon at Bennetts Bookshop, Waikato University.
