Remembrance

The Gordonton Hall was packed this morning as folk from around the district attended the 97th Anniversary of the landing at Anzac Cove.

Brett Fottheringham set the tone with an address on his visit to war graves in Burma.  He told of the thousands of POWs who died building the railroad; and how they were relocated from where they had been interred alongside the track into large military cemeteries.

In searching for the graves of three New Zealanders he was struck by the epitaphs on the Commonwealth solidiers’ graves – many with the theme of remembrance.

Prayers and songs followed, then the laying of wreaths outside on Gordonton’s War Memorial Cenotaph.

More than 100,000 New Zealanders, men and women, were deployed for service in World War One, approximately 10% of New Zealand’s population of the time; many thousands never returned.

Now an annual event in Gordonton, the Anzac Day Service was organised by members from St Mary’s Church, WEC Oaks and the Gordonton Community Board.
