Keen hunters of all ages took part in the second annual Wild Game Hunt Competition, while the sun shone brightly.
Numbers were well up on the previous year, with 89 hunters taking part for the Tauhei Combined School fundraiser.
Sixty-seven children competed in the Junior Eeling section, with some amazing creatures being caught, says co-organiser Angela Martin.
“First and second place were only separated by a mere .01 grams. These two remarkable eels were released back into their natural environment, ready for next year’s competition.”
As the children proudly displayed their catches, the fun time was evident in their beaming smiles. Exhausted from hauling the creatures in, the children still had time to relive the moment when the eel was bought to land – exhilarating times.
“Junior hunters proved that they too can catch their fair share of animals, with an array of possums, pukekos, magpies and ducks paraded along the weigh-in station,” says Angela.
Last year produced an array of boars for the Open Section. This year it seemed to be the goats’ turn to show up in numbers: Dean Lammas took out the heaviest average weight for goats, Simon O’Neill won the heaviest goat with a 46kg beast.
Andrew Pritchard and Richard O’Neill tied for first place with the most bars on the pheasant’s tail. Andrew’s trophy pheasant will be placed up on show.
While the weather didn’t hold out in the end, the event once again proved to be a fantastic fundraiser, with the PTA Committee already in discussion about dates for next year.
