Local focus for new shop

According to the Farm Shop, you “can’t buy happiness, but you can buy local. And that’s kind of the same thing.”

We concur.

The Farm Shop, in the old dairy factory, is Gordonton’s latest example of rural entrepreneurism, a small store dedicated to selling only the freshest locally-made products.

The concept of a ‘Farm Shop’ is rather English, says Tanya Clancy, one of the masterminds behind the project.

“We’re trying to decrease food miles – in other words, the distance food has to travel to get to where it’s being sold from,” explains Tanya, who, along with fellow Gordonton residents Kevin Clarke, Gemma McGarry and Colin Oliver, has been working diligently to get the shop up and running.

“It also helps showcase the kind of fresh, natural food provided by small communities,” she says.

“We can offer products at the peak of their freshness. We‘ll be selling a range of produce, fruit and vegetables, bread baked by Gemma, and a bit of arts and crafts for sale as well.

“It will take some people back to the old era where if you didn’t grow it locally, you didn’t eat it,” adds Gemma.

The concept for the shop came about after the four put their heads together after “a bit of a bad Christmas” last year.

“We wanted people to remember what it was like when they were kids, when you harvested everything yourself, made all your own stuff,” says Tanya.

“So far so good, there’s been a lot of support from the locals, and the other shops, the Firepot Café especially has been fantastic, lots of support.”

Their triumphant Grand Opening will take place on Friday May 3, next door to Gordonton Bakehouse and Takeaways. Doors open at noon.

Welcome Guys, we are so excited about your opening, I remember the first day I opened the doors of FirePot café, it was exciting and daunting all at once, now 7 years on and still loving every minute of it. You will do well, just follow your vision, goals and your heart the rest will fall into place. We welcome new businesses starting in Gordonton, it’s fantastic to see. See you on Friday at the opening. Michele Bishop – FirePot Café.
