Puketaha centenary draws close

Puketaha schoolPuketaha School celebrates its centenary on Friday September 23 and Saturday 24.  The weekend will include games from throughout the 100 years of history, tree planting and a formal dinner.

In the lead-up to the event, pupils have been learning about the old days, says deputy principal Katherine Dixon.

Senior pupils have interviewed past pupils, and heard tales of riding horses to school and dipping girls’ pigtails in inkwells, she told the Waikato Times.

Wilfrid Pound shares his memories from the 1920s when his father Oscar was sole-charge principal at the school.

Oscar taught a mixed-age group of about 28 students and was a real do-it-yourselfer, Buck said.

He was a stickler for times tables – which set Buck up for his career in banking and the creation of budgeting services.

“I think it was Dad’s maths,” he said.

Oscar was also sports mad, set up parallel bars in each school he went to, and insisted all kids play sport.

At Puketaha, he introduced the game of rounders, set up with broom handles, a rubber tube and a tennis ball and which was later picked up around New Zealand.
