Thai cooking classes coming soon

Michele outside the Firepot

Thai cooking classes are on the menu at Gordonton’s Firepot Café, and owner Michele Bishop says places are filling up fast.

“Bookings are going really well, and we’ll need to cap numbers. There’s been so much interest.”

Thai food is very popular at the moment, says Michele who is just back from a trip to Thailand.

“We had a wonderful time, and  had some beautiful food over there. The flavours are just absolutely amazing.”

Thanya Crawford will teach the classes at the Firepot, which take place in September.

With husband Doug Thanya ran one of Hamilton’s wholesale shops, specialising in Thai ingredients.  “They got very busy giving cooking classes and decided to focus on that. She will be great, we’re very excited to have her.”

On the first evening, she will make spring rolls, says Michele.  “People can have a go at making their own. For the next class, Thanya will demonstrate  how to make a pork curry and chicken and cashew dish. Recipes will be given out on the night, and also where you can buy ingredients in Hamilton. We’re really looking forward to it.”

It was intended to follow the classes with those from other cuisines, but things are happening at the Firepot, Michele says.

“We’re undergoing renovations at the moment, and are asking people to guess exactly what it is we’re doing. The wall is going and it’s going to be replaced with – what?”

Write your idea on a post-it note, stick it to the wall and go in to the draw for dinner for two at the café.

“It’s that easy.”

*Classes are on Tuesday September 11 and 18, from 6.30pm and cost $45 per person.
