Anyone lost a cockatiel?

That’s never a sparrow, N8N’s Annette Taylor thought while weeding the garden.  It was a handsome male cockatiel, high up in a poplar tree in the paddock next to the house.

The bird sat for some time, calling often.  Today (two days later) he is still around, and is in the back garden right now.

We are sure he has escaped from someone’s aviary or cage, rather than flown across from Australia.  The question is – how to catch a cockatiel?

All the experts say get someone the bird is familiar with to call it down.  So is there anyone out there who recognises this bird?  I’m sure he would like a cracker.

Thanks Antony, it does look similar, but the one around here is a bit darker, more of a wild-type bird. He’s still around, by the way – was on our roof about half an hour ago! Then flew off towards the other side of Woodlands Rd. Not sure how far he went, but he’s obviously hanging around. Put out some dried fruit and cereal for him, but he showed no interest.

Maybe try a bit of banana and/or millet sprays? And put out some fresh water each day. My guess though, is that if it isn’t getting closer and closer and caving in to the temptation of the food you put out then it’s finding plenty of food in the neighbourhood and having a grand time. Good luck!

Alas, alack, we’d no sooner found a cage than our feathered friend took off. We haven’t seen him for two days now. Regardless, we are keeping the cage full of yummy food and water and keeping watch.
      Hope he comes back…

Another suggestion…look on SPCA web-site for lost & found…go into “pets on the net” & follow the cues…I’m thinking having just searched there, “your found one” could be the one now at 5X roads (also found)!!! I recently was able to team up a “found budgie” in my native patch (my garden) with the owners within an hour of catching it…

Just checked out the bird at 5 X Rds, and it’s not our fellow, sadly. That chap has a mottled, light grey back. But will keep an eye on it. Thanks.

Hi Rachel, we’re in New Zealand – don’t think Rollo has got quite this far! Hope he turns up, all the best. We haven’t seen “our” cockatiel in over a week now – think he’s moved on.
