Remembering them in Gordonton

More than 200 people from the local and surrounding communities attended Gordonton’s Anzac Service.

“As always, it was great to see folk wearing service medals in honour of past family members who served in the war,” said organiser Keith Jellyman.

Captain Mike Lawry from the NZ Army lead the event, Deputy Mayor Dynes Fulton gave the main address, and Cilla Henry spoke on behalf of the community.

“The outdoor service with the laying of wreaths, playing The Last Post and the time of silence never fails to bring a sense of dignity and remembrance to the service.”

More than 100,000 New Zealanders, men and women, were deployed for service in World War One, approximately 10% of New Zealand’s population of the time; many thousands never returned.

The Gordonton service was organised by members from St Mary’s Church and WEC Oaks.

“The whole event is important for our community, as it brings us all together. Which is an important part of what Anzac is about.”
