Locals are rallying behind a family involved in a serious car accident last week.

The family were returning to their Orini home on Monday 2 March when their car was rear-ended by a vehicle allegedly travelling over the speed limit.

The couple’s 22-month old toddler Robert suffered serous head injuries and is in Starship Hospital after being airlfited from Waikato Hospital. The 15-day-old newborn baby, also in the car, was monitored for 48 hours at Waikato before travelling to be with his father and brother in Auckland.

A Givealittle page has been set up by Tracey Shead, the child’s aunt, to support day-to-day living costs and to make the journey ahead less stressful.

She said with the damage to the car the family are lucky to be still here. “The car is written off.”

While her sister and partner are okay, they are battered and bruised and coping with stress.

“They are focusing on their little boys at the moment.”

Great Beginnings Gordonton is also collecting for the family. In a Facebook post Tracey Ryan said little Robert, who attends the GBG, was out of an induced comma and making good progress.

“We are doing a collection at Great Beginnings which we will pass onto his aunty to get to the family next week. We are sending love and strength to Nolene and Rory and millions of hugs to Robert.”

More than $1000 has been donated since the fund was started on 7 March 2020, it closes 30 Apr 2020.
