Speaking well with Taupiri toastmasters

Everyone has a story to tell, says Judy Chrystall. “And if you’re a bit shy about speaking in public, help is at hand.”

The Lower Waikato Toastmaster’s club meets twice a month, and is dedicated to communication and leadership skills development.

“Leaders emerge through the regularity of giving speeches, gaining feedback and learning to tell their stories. Toastmasters is a safe place to speak and not only to be listened to it is a place to be heard as well,” says Judy, who is club president.

“Our aim is to help people to speak well, with confidence and clairty. At our meetings we support each other, network and form great relationships through those we meet from different walks of life.”

Formed 41 years ago, the club meets in Taupiri on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month.

One of the annual activites they are involved in is co-ordinating a school speech competition, which is open to all primary schools in the north Waikato area.

“This encourages pupils to present their speeches well – and their speeches are certainly outstanding.”

Anyone over 18 is welcome to attend the monthly meetings which are held at the the War Memorial hall in Greenlane Road, Taupiri from 7.30pm.
