Country kids grow well

Avis Leeson came out to Gordonton School recently to show a crop of young gardeners tricks and tips.

The 83-year-old is on a mission to teach New Zealand kids how to grow vegetables and fruit – click here for the full story.

Annette Taylor caught up with Avis and helper Judy Chrystall, back left, on the day.

The young ones themselves said gardening was really fun, and it was great getting dirty. They are all looking forward to a big feast at the end of the season.

Avis reckons country kids are tops – “Those small people out at Gordonton are alive. If you said, ‘see who can go the highest up that tree’ they’d be up there like a flash. Say that to the same age group in town and they’d go ‘I’m not doing that, I might fall.’ So country kids have still got something over the ones in town.”

The garden at Gordonton boasts a lovely selection of brussel sprouts, cauliflower, bok choy, cauliflower, onions, parsley and celery.
And there are 22 young ‘uns who have signed up to look after it.

Well done all!
