Orini gardeners made the news recently when they climbed on a bus and headed to the annual Powerco Taranaki Garden Spectacular.

They visited 20 gardens in three days, and Taranaki Daily News reporter Helen Harvey said they were a hardy bunch.

The gardening club, she discovered, has been going for almost 50 years (48 to be precise) and it’s the first time the group have made the trip to Taranaki.

It is the variety of the garden that impressed the Waikato visitors.

Orini Garden Club member Helen Rennie, who has been with the garden club since it began, loved the tour.

“It’s gorgeous. We’ve seen the most amazing selection of different sorts of gardens.”

Last year the garden spectacular attracted nearly 6000 visitors and 54,000 garden visits. More than 75 per cent of visitors are from out of town and some are from out of the country – there were two buses carrying Australians. But the lasses from the Waikato caught the attention of one gardening reporter.
