Speedster gets nabbed

A Waikato man has lost his car and had his licence suspended after he was clocked travelling at 162km/h in Hamilton, says the NZ Herald.

Waikato police Senior Sergeant Gill Meadows said a patrol car nabbed the alleged speedster as he travelled on a wet stretch of Wairere Dr between Hukanui and Gordonton Rds on Sunday morning.

“It was a male in his mid-20s. He’s lost his car and his licence has been suspended and he’s been summoned to court… it was quite a high speed.”

The speed limit in the area was 80km/h, she said.

“We’d like to remind people to drive to the conditions, we’ve been getting some high speeds lately. 162km/h isn’t great.”

The man was expected to get his car, which was impounded, and his licence back after 28 days.

And power was cut to households around Puketaha after a car smashed into a powerpole on Friday, says the Waikato Times.  The car struck the pole, bringing down powerlines, on a section of State Highway 1B near Seddon Rd at Puketaha.

WEL Networks said about 404 homes around Puketaha Rd, Sainsbury Rd, Seddon Rd, Taylor Rd and Te Papa Rd had been affected.
