The fundraiser took a year off last year while the school had a change of principal, but the hunt is on again this May, says committee member Bronwyn Lammas.

“It’s an event not to be missed, and a great way for kids to have fun and help their school in the process.”

There are more more cash prizes of $200 this year.  (These are for 1st average mallard, boar, stag or snapper in the senior category, and $100 for the 1st average snapper in the junior.)

“For those that love hunting and fishing this is the competition to enter. The event is also about giving young ones the chance to take part in some proper outdoor activity – to get out there, get muddy and have some fun. It’s what life on the farm is all about.”

With growing enthusiasm as each year passes, the competition caters for young and old. Entry forms can be downloaded here or pick them up from Wright Bait and Tackle in Morrinsville.

Current firearm and trout fishing licences are a must.

The last event, in 2017, raised about $5000 which went towards the school’s building extension, and allowed new carpet to be laid in two classrooms.  This year’s money will go towards an end-of-year whole school camp, as well as various resources.

Bronwyn says the fundraiser gets a lot of positive feedback.  “The prizes are great and the food we provide at the weigh-in is awesome – wild pork rolls, fish chowder, goat curry, butter turkey and venison.”

She and her husband both enjoy hunting and fishing – “As do our two boys, 10 and 12.  They love it.  The kids have great fun on the afternoon, we put on a turkey run and a possum throw.  All junior entrants go home with a goodie bag too. It’s a great event, with something for everyone. ”

The Tauhei Wild Game Hunt and Fishing Competition is runs from 17,18,19 May starting at 1am Friday morning.   Weight table open at 3pm to 4pm on Sunday – participants must be in line by 4pm to be eligible for prizes.

Entries need to be in by Monday 13 May for the early bird or Thursday16 May for late. Eeling under 12 $5. Junior hunter early $20 or $25 for late. Senior $35 early or $40 for late.
