Homecoming present

After a month’s backpacking around Thailand we’re back in Gordonton.

It’s chillier than I remember but the grass is green and not a snake in sight. But more than that, a special treat was waiting for us at home.

The daffodils are out, the daphne smells beautiful and the Taiwanese cherry on the bank is in full bloom. And, on that cherry (which I had threatened to cut out) are three glossy tuis – nattering and clacking away, totally at home.

It was a real surprise, and just glorious to hear them singing their hearts out as they fed. We’ve had the odd tui fly by over recent years, but they never stayed for long. We’re hoping that when the kowhai flowers soon, this trio will enjoy that as well.

Lots of things are happening around the area as well, and in coming weeks I’ll be finding out what’s what and who is doing it. This coming Saturday there’s serious spade work going on at Pukemokemoke Reserve – another working bee from 1pm to 5pm. (Trees to be planted, weeds to be cleared, fun to be had by all.)

Give me a yell if you’re involved in an event or happening that others really need to know about.

But, right now, there’s a month’s worth of washing to hang out and wood to chop – how nice to hear the song of this beautiful bird while we do it.

PS Just planted our garlic – only six weeks late but those who know say there is still time. Hope they’re right! (Our garlic planting plans were foiled by getting flu before we flew to Thailand. Sorry for the pun.)

Hi Annette, lovely to hear you are home after a great time in Thailand. I have a very nice young man from Taiwan staying with me – a Wwoofer of course – didn’t get the interview with one of my other helpers is that right. I had a very good time in the States with family and I had forgotten how hot it is there although this summer is exceptional they say. Yes everything is green!! so dry and dying in the States. Cup of tea on Friday? or is it too soon?

Thank you! We have the wood burning stove on full so tea would not take long… but maybe after your relaxing trip to Hamburg!
