Gordonton’s top bachelor!

There’s a lot riding on 28-year-old Tom Biesly’s shoulders. The Gordonton lad is our local hope for this year’s National Fieldays rural bachelor of the year competition.

He’s not just up against other rural Kiwis – three Ozzies are vying for the top spot, as part of the Fielday’s global theme.

Our Tom is a former city slicker who says he’s never been happier since making the switch from the city to country. (And has shown extreme good taste in his choice of that piece of country, ed)

He reckons he’s never looked back. One of his recent Facebook posts – “Awesome to get some great weather today! Can’t believe I used to work in a cubicle! Living the dream.”

But the one thing that’s missing is that special lady that would really seal the deal and give him ultimate bragging rights to mates still tucked away in the big smoke.

A jack of all trades, he not only has ace farming skills but is also into cooking, music, films, art, comics and reading about theology and philosophy.

Tom is up against 26-year-old Fergus King, who is from Matamata and proud of it. The remaining good keen men are Monty Bamford, Canterbury, Simon Washer, Taranaki and Glen Hammond, Geraldine. The three from over the ditch are Andrew Blake, NSW, Dan Korff and Sam Tretheway, both from Victoria.

Beginning today with a special race, the finalists will be at Fieldays where they’ll compete in heats over four days to test their agriculturally-derived skills, No 8 wire innovative attitude and good, all-round charisma. They will be housed in a secret location known as the ‘Bachelor Base Camp’.

One bachelor will receive the people’s choice award. The prizes total $20,000 and include a Suzuki Quad bike and Swanndri package.

Number 8 Network is completely unbiased in this competition, may the best man win.
