Raw milk will soon be flowing in Hamilton, from Gordonton farmers Graham and Rebecca Barlow on Piako Rd.

The couple are working with Village Milk, a Nelson company interested in nutrition and committed to bringing raw milk back to the community.  Mr Barlow is thought to be the first in the Waikato to have a raw milk vending machine, which is due to arrive any day now.

“Raw milk is unpasteurised, and requires a substantial amount of preparation before milking to ensure that the milk is clean and safe followed by filtering and refrigeration and finally the filling of a glass bottle from the Italian automatic dispenser at the farm gate,” said Graham.

To celebrate the launch, there will be a Village Fair on-site on Saturday 28 September where people can meet the farmers, see the herd, learn more about raw unpasteurized milk and have a taste test. To help set a carnival atmosphere, there will be a sausage sizzle to raise funds for the Gordonton School soccer team, plus smoothies and a coffee cart both offering samples to try.

Raw milk has been well received by consumers, says Village Milk’s marketing manager Rachel Bauer.

“It’s been something of a nostalgic reminder of something lost for many New Zealanders – the personal contact with the farm, which can be almost therapeutic in its own right.”

The idea of buying raw milk directly from the farm began in Golden Bay, Moutere was the second to open in March this year. Gordonton will be the third.

Customers can purchase 1 litre glass milk bottles, which they then use to collect their milk.

The milk will be available from a vending machine, which dispenses 1 litre at a time, at a cost of $2.50 per litre. The vending machine means milk can be collected at any time.

• Village Milk Gordonton opens at 57 Piako Road, Gordonton on Saturday 28 September, from 9am to 1pm. For more information click here.

What an awesome way to get milk – its got to be better for you! Wish it could be cheaper thou, our family goes through 3-4 liters a day! However I know you’ve always got to pay for the quality stuff aye and we’ll definitely be coming to buy some and show the kids – how cool 🙂

    I’m in.
The price is very fair – I’ve been trying to use non homogenised milk for some years now and it’s getting harder and harder to find and way more expensive (which is odd because you would think that there is less processing involved!!)

Thank you for offering this option

  3. […] This is not the first time raw farm milk has been available on Piako Rd. “We heard they started something similar but don’t know too much about their system, however we are supplying A2 milk.” […]
