Pick a (Matariki) winner

Budding writers and artists have been busy creating their entries for the Matariki Short Story/Comic Strip Competition and Waikato District Council needs help to pick the People’s Vote winner.

As part of the Waikato District Matariki Festival, Waikato District Libraries ran the competition which was centred around the following words – Grow/Whakatupu(-ria), Celebrate/Whakanui, Star/Whetu, Dark/Po, Eyes/Karu, Feast/Hakari and Vehicle (eg car, train, boat)/Waka.

“The level of interest in this competition has been fantastic, as well as the standard of entries. We certainly have a crop of very talented creative people in our district,” said Council general manager customer support Sue Duignan.

The panel of judges, consisting of Paul Bradley (Creative Waikato), Pura Hope (Te Wharekura o Rakaumanga) and Pareoranga Te Kata (Train Me) had their work cut out for them choosing first and second place in each category, she said.

“It’s going to be a tough job to pick the winners, so we want to hear from the public as well.”

You can cast your People’s Vote simply by visiting the Council’s Facebook page (click here) and simply like your favourite entry.

The entry with the most likes at the end of the week will be crowned People’s Vote winner and receive a $50 book voucher.

Prize giving will be at 3.30pm on Tuesday 29 July in the Council Chambers at the Ngaruawahia Office, where the winning entries will be displayed.
