Cracker cricket at Woodlands

It was a smashing game between Gordonton locals and Gavins on the weekend at Woodlands, and here’s some photos to prove it.

But wait – there’s more.  Why not get playing yourself?

Richard Riddell, who founded the Woodlands Senior Cricket Club in 1991, would like to see the club reformed.

The team folded in 2003 due to a lack of players – some were lured away after the Orini Domain was completed.  The Woodlands Junior Club continued until 2006, but folded when a coach couldn’t be found.

“Now it’s time to look at getting the senior club running again,” says Richard.

The oval was designed in 1991, by New Zealand test cricketer John Parker.

Through community fundraising – largely dead calf collection and bull calf raising schemes – $30,000 was raised for the pavilion, which was the old Te Rapa Bowling Club rooms.  With Waikato District Council support, this was completed in 1995 and in 2005 it became a cafe.

Anyone who feels like donning the whites (do they do this anymore?) and joining a senior cricket club, contact Richard. He’d love to hear from you.

Phone 824 3850 or email here. Gavins won, by the way.

Locals – 111; Gavins – 112.
