Get cracking for local elections

With 17 nominations received for the local elections Waikato District Council is reminding people they only have until midday on Friday 16 August to get their nominations in.

So far the Council has received:

  • three nominations for mayor
  • twelve nominations to stand as a councillor
  • two nominations for community boards

Electoral officer Maria Edgar Maria Edgar says if you’re a New Zealand citizen, over 18 years of age and are on the electoral roll you can stand as a candidate.

“All you need is the desire to represent your community and make a difference to the Waikato district.”

Anyone wishing to stand as an elected member must be nominated by two people enrolled in the district or ward they are standing in, and pay a deposit of $200.

Ms Edgar urges people not to wait until the last minute to get nominations in.

“If you do leave it until the last minute and there is something wrong with, or missing from, your application we cannot provide an extension of time.”
