Sian’s art show impresses

Sian's exhibition

Eight-year-old artist Sian Bartley’s first solo exhibition, Just Getting Started, was a huge success, with a good turnout from family and supporters.

The Gordonton School pupil only began painting recently, taking art workshops with artists Raymond Jennings and Joanne Clarke.

Jo Clarke says response to the solo show was overwhelming, and many of Sian’s fellow students were impressed at her skill.

“What stands out for me is the children’s response, many came up to us to declare their amazement at what Sian has acheived. ‘Sian is such a good artist.’ ‘She’s a star!’ Everyone was so totally supportive.”

Raymond Jennings says Sian has exceptional talent. ” She is producing some very strong work. Just getting started – she is on her way.”

The title for the exhibition came from a discussion on using the last of the paint, says Joanne.

“I suggested she create an abstract work. We had talked about over-working things previously, so I joked ‘well that’s looking a little over-worked,’ to which she quipped – ‘I’m just getting started!’”

The exhibition runs at Gordonton School until Wednesday (15 August).

Jo Clarke and Raymond Jennings will work with Sian for another eight weeks, then she will join their new Art After School art workshop at Gordonton Primary, which will have a group focus.

“We’ve got some keen little artists ready to try their hand at some large scale projects.”

The couple, originally from Auckland, came to Hamilton in March. “…since arriving numerous arts based workshops and programs have opened up. Hamilton seems to want us.”

  • The Art After School art workshop begins in Term 4, October 17 to December 5, on Wednesdays from 3.15pm to 4.45pm. For more information send an email or call/text: 021 2988510.
